If There Is One Anti-Smoking Campaign That The Indian Government Should Immediately Execute, This Should Be It
When the Government made it mandatory for Cigarette manufacturers to put up a pictorial warning on the packs, the consumers did take notice but got used to it in a matter of days. We haven’t seen the government do anything more after that.
Two years back, Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA) made an effort to limit Indians’ cigarette consumption with an amazing campaign called “Chanting Lighters”. They made the electric lighters chant something that would repel the smokers from it instantly. This straightforward message is much more powerful that the pictorial warnings and the smokers would take an indefinite time to really get used to it. If there is one campaign that our government should adapt to bring about a real change in the lives of smokers, this should be it.
